Unryul Mask Dance

The Korean nation, with a 5 000-year history and brilliant culture, bequeathed many pieces of national cultural heritage, and one of them is the Unryul Mask Dance, which was created in the area of Unryul County, South Hwanghae Province in the western part of Korea. It is one of the representative mask dances, along with Pongsan and Kangnyong mask dances, which were created in the areas of North and South Hwanghae provinces. It is characteristic in that it not only reflects the life sentiments and aspirations of the local people but also is diverse in its form and rich in its movements.

The folk dances including the Unryul Mask Dance are played among the local people thanks to the policy of the Workers’ Party of Korea and the state on the conservation of national cultural heritage.
