Report of KFA UK 30th Film Night .

The Korean Friendship Association of the UK(KFA UK ) held its 30th film night on the 28th of August at 1900 hours via Telegram . Participating were KFA UK members and officials from London , Scotland and other parts of the UK as well as guests from KFA Andalusia , KFA Germany , the People’s Korea Initiative of Poland and other countries.

Marking the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation the film “ My Home Village “ was shown . “My Home Village “ was the first ever film produced in People’s Korea  , it was shot in black and white in 1949 .

The film is set in a Korean village and centres around a young man Kwan Phil and his family who are poor peasants , They suffer  all kinds of oppression , injustice and insult from the local landlord and the Japanese occupiers . The cruelty of Japanese imperialist rule as well as the harsh exploitation of the landlord who calls ordinary people beggars is graphically depicted . The landlord and Japanese are shown as lazy people having parties all the time and laughing at the poor people . The landlord is in league with the Japanese police and indeed relies on the Japanese police to arrest people who incur his anger .

Of course this situation does not last forever , Korea is liberated from Japanese rule and you see inspiring scenes of the people’s revolutionary uprising against the Japanese and landlords . The film concludes with happy scenes of the liberated homeland and Kwan Phil’s reunion with his mother .

It was great to watch a classic of DPRK cinema , a gem of Juche cinema !

The film night concluded at 20.35 hours BST.
