The Chollima Statue, the spirit and symbol of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, is in the centre of the capital city of Pyongyang. Here Chollima means a winged horse galloping 1,000 ri a day
The two riders on Chollima rushing toward the future represent the Korean people and one of them is a woman.
The woman farmer with a rice-sheaf depicts the heroic Korean women promoting the vigorous advance of the state as powerfully as men.
Merits Written in More Than 70-year-long History
In theDPRK the Pyongyang Kim Jong Suk Textile Mill is the first to be considered among the factories with many women.
The mill has produced 17 heroines, 9 Merited Weavers and 13 Meritorious Persons of Socialist Patriotism for more than 70 years.
There are also women who worked as deputies to power organs at all levels including the Supreme People’s Assembly.
Mun Kang Sun, Head of the Towel Workshop, became a heroine in her girlhood.
“I thought hero is a special man.
I only turned out a lot of fabrics and so I’ve never thought that I would be a hero.
Now I am a mother with two children. The state let me study and entrusted me with a unit. And it introduced me to the whole country whenever opportunity permitted.
I am really happy under the grateful socialist system that values the women and holds them up.”
There are not only production buildings but also a nursery and a kindergarten at the mill. And there are wonderful cultural and welfare facilities and hostel for the working women.
The working women are devoting themselves to their jobs without any worry in the workplace with all conditions needed for women.
The first half of this year has already witnessed a woman worker who carried out two-year quota and more than 110 workers who fulfilled their yearly assignments.
Among them is Merited Weaver Ri Myong Sun well-known to the whole country as a model of the times as she set the record of weaving fabrics as long as more than 2,400 kilometres by covering the distance of over 400,000 kilometres which is equivalent to making ten rounds of the earth for 25 years.
“I just wanted to be a good worker by turning out more fabrics than anybody else. So I worked and worked during my 32-year-long career of weaver. The state acknowledged it greatly and awarded me the titles of Merited Weaver and Meritorious Person of Socialist Patriotism.
The more we work, the greater glory and happiness are given to us in our socialist system.”
There are many women officials including a leading Party official in the mill.
Mun Kyong Sil, Head of the General Chemical Fiber Spinning Workshop, is one of the five heads of general workshops. She is also a deputy to the Songyo District People’s Assembly.
In February, she participated in the Ninth Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea as a delegate.
She led the workers of her workshop to carry out the first half-yearly plan before others. In the course, a worker fulfilled the two-year plan of the mill for the first time and more than 40 workers carried out their yearly assignments.
While working at the mill for nearly 40 years, Mun Kyong Sil was involved in the study-while-you-work system and completed a university course.
“I started to work at the mill at the age of 17. I grew to be the head of a general workshop and a deputy to the district people’s assembly taking care of the life of the local people and took part in the Ninth Congress of the glorious Workers’ Party of Korea as a delegate. All this is unthinkable apart from the grateful socialist system which respects the women.”
Fully Realizing Dreams and Hopes
Ri Ye Rim, Director of Postgraduate School of the Pyongyang University of Computer Technology, is one of the authorities on artificial intelligence of the DPRK.
She is just in her 50s. She became a doctor in her 30s and a professor in her 40s.
To be a good educator was a dream and hope she kept in her childhood.
She distinguished herself as a student inventor during her university days. She made two inventions and developed more than 10 new valuable programs in 10 years after she became a teacher, proving herself as a woman of ability.
She also created a new teaching method capable of further enhancing the ability of students and generalized it to the university.
Students liked and respected her as she has not only profound knowledge and distinguished ability in her major field of study but also makes good use of diverse teaching methods.
As the director of the postgraduate school now, she is always working with the same tireless passion and spirit of inquiry as she did when she was a new teacher.
“In retrospect, I can say that I realized my dream and wish.
I learned information technology as I wished and became an educator as I hoped. While teaching students, I became a doctor and a professor.
I’ve never been harassed by burden of housekeeping as a woman. On the contrary, I have lived amid the love of the collective.
It is my pride and happiness to contribute to prosperity of the country with my knowledge.”

The Korean women keep deep in their hearts the noble consciousness that their destiny and happiness of their families are possible in the socialist motherland. With the consciousness, they are working hard with patriotism in their workplaces.
Among them are those women officials devoting themselves to the people, women scientists making constant scientific researches, sportswomen flying the national flag on the international arena and women making innovations at factories and farms.
Such reality is related with July 30, 1946, the significant day when the Law on Sex Equality was promulgated.
Along with this day, the position and role of Korean women were changed beyond recognition and the great achievements made by the Korean women written in the history of the country.
It is the noble intention of the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un that as the position and role of women are enhanced, the development of the state is accelerated and the harmony and unity of the society become consolidated.
Under the guidance of the great leader, the Korean women will fully display their dignity and might as a powerful force pushing one of the wheels of revolution.
