September 9 is the day when the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea was founded.
The DPRK was built by the Korean people according to their will for the first time in history.
The great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung, father of socialist Korea, founded the DPRK and made the Koreans a powerful and dignified people who take their destiny into their own hands and shape it independently.
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea
The name of a country is the official name of a state.
It is the most important national symbol representing the class character of a state and its form and the form of a government. And the institution of the name of a country plays the role of milestone of state building.
The Korean people put an end to the Japanese imperialist colonial rule and liberated the country on August 15, 1945.
Although the country was liberated, there were a lot of different assertions and opinions at that time on the issue of what kind of government should be built in Korea.
Comrade Kim Il Sung made clear that the state to be built in the liberated country is a democratic, sovereign and independent state and that is our line of nation building and the path desired by the masses of the people.
He saw that the name of the country reflected the unanimous aspiration and desire of the entire Korean people.
One day in July 1948, he called officials and said some people still argue about the name of the country and it should be put right.
Lecturer Ri Yu Jong at the Korean Revolution Museum said that after liberation Comrade Kim Il Sung founded a party and put forward its political line on founding a democratic people’s republic in Korea and energetically led the work for its realization. She continued:
“The name of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea already enjoyed absolute support and approval of the entire people through the discussion about constitution.
But the factionalists, who had hindered the government building and the institution of the name of the country in every way, said the name of the country with nine letters after Korea is too long. And they talked nonsense that our country could be named the people’s republic or the democratic republic without the word of people.
The great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung made clear that we should name the country as its masters according to the actual conditions of the country and the demand of the people and so it is not necessary to read others’ faces and we should institute the name of the country demanded by its people with the mind of our own.”
On September 9, 1948, Comrade Kim Il Sung declared all over the world the founding of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, an independent and sovereign state earnestly desired by the Korean people.
His Noble Intention for the National Flag
The national flag of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is a symbol of the country and officially represents the dignity and sovereignty of the Republic.
It was the intention of Comrade Kim Il Sung that the national flag of the DPRK should be completely new and Korean style different from any other countries in terms of its form and content.
It was a long-cherished national desire of the Korean people, the erstwhile ruined people, to have their genuine state and its symbol–national flag.
In the days of building a country, Comrade Kim Il Sung clearly elucidated the fundamental orientation and stand of instituting the national flag of the Republic to be founded in the future and taught in detail the ideological contents to be reflected on the national flag and the way how to express them.
One day in January 1948, he met designers of national emblem and flag and said it is very important state affairs to institute the national emblem and flag and that making them well is of great significance in glorifying the dignity and honour of Korea eclipsed on the world map in the past and increasing the national pride and self-confidence of the Korean people.
That day, he said it is good to make the national flag with red, white and blue colours and added that if a five-pointed star is drawn in the white circle of the national flag, it can show in a representative way the tradition carried forward by the DPRK, the resourceful spirit of the advancing Korean people and the rosy prospect of development of the country.
Like this, the flag of the DPRK could be completed under his direct guidance.
Bright Prospect Reflected on the National Emblem
National emblem is an official mark representing the mission of a country concerned, which reflects the feature and aspiration of the country.
Comrade Kim Il Sung was so concerned about even a line and a dot of the national emblem so that it could reflect the feature of a new prosperous country to be built in liberated Korea.
One day in February 1948, he said the issue of electrification of the country should be reflected in the national emblem so as to show a bright prospect of the country which would be changed into a developed, rich, powerful and civilized one in the world in the future. He taught that in our country there is a world’s leading hydroelectric power station associated with precious labour of the people and if we draw it well in the national emblem, it will be able to show the prospect of electrification of the country intuitively.
And he ensured that a five-pointed red star in the national flag was drawn with its beaming light in the upper part of the power station, ears of rice forming an oval frame bound with a red ribbon and the name of the country written in the middle of the ribbon.
He also said the design of the national emblem should be drawn to clearly show the unity and cohesion of the broad masses of the people based on the worker-peasant alliance with the working class as the core and the prospect of development of a powerful and modern industry and an advanced agriculture.
Thanks to his outstanding foresightedness and wisdom, the design of the national emblem could represent the bright future of the DPRK to shine as a powerful socialist country and the Korean people who would enjoy a happy life in the paradise generation after generation.
The name of the DPRK and its national flag and emblem are shining as a symbol of the dignity and glory of the Republic, telling forever the exploits of Comrade Kim Il Sung for state building.
